599, 600, 700, 800-Which should I register for?

General Information

AA 599, 600, 700 and 800 are variable credit courses, meaning that you have to enter the number of credits to enroll in at the time you register. Each quarter you can register for 1-10 credits of independent study courses. The expectation is that for each registered credit you spend 3 hours/week on average on the course. For example, if you register for 3 credits of AA 600 then you should be spending 9 hours/week on average conducting research.

In order to register for independent study courses, you must receive permission from the faculty member you are working with. After receiving permission, Paul will provide the appropriate add code for the course.

Which course should I register for?

AA 599

  • Register for AA 599 if you are completing a class (not research) as independent study that you need a numerical grade in

  • In order to register you will need to submit  the AA 599 Registration Form which requires a course syllabus

  • If you want to apply this course to your degree requirements you will also need to submit a Degree Requirement Petition. The only exception is if you are taking an existing A A course individually as an independent study.

AA 600

  • Register for AA 600 if you are conducting research with a faculty member, but do not yet have a clearly defined thesis or dissertation project.

  • In order to register for the first time, you will need to submit the AA 600 Registration Form which requires a Graduate Research Proposal signed by your faculty advisor.

    • In future quarters you will use the same add code to sign up for AA 600. If you faculty advisor changes,  your research significantly changes, or you switch to AA 700 you will need to submit a new form.

AA 700

  •  Register for 700 once you have a clearly identified thesis project. Only students completing a master's thesis are eligible to take 700.

  • In order to register, you will need to submit the AA 700 Registration Form which includes a Graduate Thesis Proposal signed by your faculty advisor.

    • You only need to submit this form once. You can use the same add code to register for future quarters of 700. If your faculty advisor or thesis project changes then you will need to submit a new proposal.

AA 800

  • Register for 800 if you are a PhD student, have passed the qualifying exam, and are not working on a master's thesis.

    • If you have not yet passed the qualifying exam, register for AA 600 instead.

    • There is no form required to register for 800. Paul or your faculty adviser can provide an add code for the course.
