Experiential Learning Opportunities

Capstone 

Undergraduate seniors and advanced masters students participate in a rigorous design-and-build project focusing on the skills and knowledge unique to the field of aerospace engineering.

All projects provide students with focused mentoring; an opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary teamwork and practice communication skills; gain a deeper knowledge of regulatory requirements; fiscal and procurement management; social and ethical considerations and market awareness.

Capstone Options: Industry Sponsored; Registered Student Organizations; In-House Research

Students in the undergraduate major will enroll in:

  • Winter Quarter -AA 410 or AA 420 i

  • Spring Quarter - AA 411 or 421 

Junior Lab 

Students in the undergraduate major will enroll in the following sequence of courses during their junior year:

AA 320 Aerospace Instrumentation - Hands-on laboratory experience for understanding the design and function of electronic circuits and instrumentation utilized in aerospace engineering. Topics include Ohm's law, Kirchoff's laws, DC and AC circuits, passive and active components, op-amps and comparators, sensors, signal condition in electromechanical systems and actuators, digital systems, and data acquisition.

AA 321 Aerospace Laboratory I - The design and conduct of experimental inquiry in the field of aeronautics and astronautics. Laboratory experiments on supersonic flow, structures, vibrations, material properties, and other topics. Theory, calibration, and use of instruments, measurement techniques, analysis of data, report writing

AA 322 Aerospace Laboratory II - Design and conduct of experimental inquiry in the field of aeronautics and astronautics. Student groups propose, design, build, and conduct laboratory experiments in one of the following broad topic areas: aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, or energetics.

Department Affiliated Registered Student Organizations (RSO)

The RSO’s have two different purposes:

  1. Design, Build, Test (Compete)

  2. Outreach/Education

There are different processes for these due to the nature of their tasks and thus will be identified separately.

Design, Build, Test RSO’s

 A&A CubeSat Team (AACT) is an organization of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students working together to design, build, and test CubeSats. Our mission is to teach students the fundamentals of space systems and provide a hands-on experience that complements academic work. aact@uw.edu  

Design, Build, Fly at UW - Student teams will design, fabricate, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned, electric powered, radio controlled aircraft which can best meet the specified mission profile. The goal is a balanced design possessing good demonstrated flight handling qualities and practical and affordable manufacturing requirements while providing a high vehicle performance.  uwfsae@uw.edu

The Society for Advanced Rocket Propulsion (SARP) is a group of students at the University of Washington that has come together to design, build, test, and launch an experimental hybrid rocket. Our mission is to develop reusable hybrid rocket technology as well as to apply scientific and engineering theory with hands-on experience. adaptuw@uw.edu

Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) is a UW chapter of a national student organization pursuing engineering challenges and competitions including rocket design and build, space policy, connecting opportunities and networking within the industry. We want to empower all students, regardless of their major, to learn about space and create the solutions for the challenges it poses. uwrobots@uw.edu

Outreach/Education RSO’s

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is the principal society and voice serving the aerospace profession. Our purpose is to ignite and celebrate aerospace ingenuity and collaboration, and its importance to our way of life. The AIAA UW student chapter connects current students to the AIAA pacific northwest section and to the national AIAA organization.  subuw@uw.edu 

Women in Aerospace club will provide a forum to discuss diversity issues in the field of aerospace engineering, and organize outreach programs to encourage young women to pursue careers in aero/astro. Club membership is open to all UW students, regardless of gender identity.  woaatuw@gmail.com
