Undergraduate Capstone Timeline

August 

  • Early August - administrative coordination with all lab course instructors 

  • Mid August - identify TAs and GSAs for experiential learning

Autumn Quarter 

September

Onboard TAs and GSAs to purchasing and facilities processes

September

Finalize list of projects

  • External projects identified with Jill Kaatz, CoE Advancement

  • Solicit proposals from RSOs and faculty for internal projects 

Early October

Students complete all necessary training (eg, Machine Shop, lab specific requirements) 

Early October

Undergraduate committee reviews and approves project proposals

Early October

Intellectual Property lecture (class session); where applicable, students/groups sign NDA’s for industry sponsored projects

Late October

*Capstone pitch day (class session). All capstone projects available from industry partners and A&A faculty members presented for student preference

Early November (end of first week of November) 

*Student project applications due. Student selection of capstone projects are due.

Late November

*Project team assignments announced before Thanksgiving (includes workbench assignments), to participating students, industry partners, and A&A faculty.

Early December

Mentor/advisor orientation: Orientation for all participating industry partners and A&A faculty.

Early December

Team kickoff meeting: First meeting for each team will take place in early December after the mentor/advisor orientation.

Winter Quarter 

  • Weekly - check in with Course instructor(s), TAs and GSAs, fiscal and facilities staff to ensure project support

January 

Training for anyone with workbenches in ITAR protected space

Late January 

Purchasing and facilities training (class session)

Early February

Systems requirement review. AIAA conference format with 20 minutes per team presentation and 5 minutes for questions.

Mid March

Peer evaluations conducted 

March

Preliminary design review. AIAA conference format with 20 minutes per team presentation and 5 minutes for questions.

Spring Quarter

  • Weekly - check in with Course instructor, TA’s, GSA’s fiscal and facilities staff to ensure projects get supported 

Late April

Critical design review. AIAA conference format with 20 minutes per team presentation and 5 minutes for questions.

Late May

*Public film festival. Film Fest awards decided

Late May Monday before Memorial Day 

Purchasing and machine shop scheduling cut-off for capstone

June

Final design review. Final oral presentations with one hour for industry teams and two hours for large teams. - Design review awards decided

June

Final written reports submitted

June before quarter ends

All materials returned to the classroom lab manager, Any materials that need to be mailed back to industry partners Clean out lab benches. 

June Graduation 

Capstone awards announced (based on evaluations of the projects) during A&A Graduation event
