Health, Wellness and Safety

As a member of the UW community, you have access to various resources available for support, both on- and off-campus.  Many on-campus options are supported through the fees you pay each quarter, and all students are eligible to access and utilize UW resources. The Husky Health & Well-Being website provides an excellent overview of all health and wellness resources on campus. Select resources are highlighted below.

Mental health

College can be a stressful experience, and this stress may manifest itself in many different ways, including emotional symptoms, physical symptoms, cognitive symptoms, and behavioral symptoms.  As you go through college, be cognizant of how stress manifests itself for you and explore options for stress management and reduction.

Safety

Emergencies

  • 911 is the emergency phone number in the United States.  You can call for free from any phone and reach police, fire, or medical assistance in emergency situations such as a fire, a crime (especially in-progress), a car crash (especially if someone is injured), or a medical emergency (especially if someone needs immediate medical attention).  Texting 911 is available in Seattle/King County if you are unable to call.

  • If you’re not sure whether the situation is a true emergency, officials recommend calling 911 and letting the call-taker determine whether you need emergency help.

UW Police Department

  • The UW Police Department has several campus safety resources available for students:

    • SafeZone app - check-in and virtual guardian services, connection to UWPD and other services on- and off-campus.  The app does not track your location until you activate one of its alert buttons.

    • Husky Night Walk and Night Ride

      • Night Walk: call (206) 685-WALK (9255) to request a uniformed security guard to escort you from a campus building to another part of campus or to the residential area north of 45th Street.

      • Night Ride: shuttle service around campus that also provides drop-offs nearby campus.

    • Emergency phones on campus  can sound alarms and connect you to UWPD.  Look for blue or brown towers with lights at the top.

    • Other UWPD services: bike/laptop registry, victim advocacy, crime reporting

UW Alert

  • Sign up for UW Alert  to receive email and text alerts about safety incidents on or near campus, including chemical spills, threats, weather delays/closures, and more.

SafeCampus

  • SafeCampus is a great resource when you recognize warning signs in yourself or someone else, or something just doesn't seem right.  They will listen to your concerns, advise you on the best course of action, and loop in others who can help.  Call SafeCampus at (206) 685-SAFE (7233)
